Blessed Assurance: At Home With the Bomb in Amarillo, Texas
Published in Paperback by Syracuse Univ Pr (Trade) (November, 1997)
Average review score:

Compelling Story for EveryoneI first read this book in college in a theory of religion class. But don't be put off by that. This is the story of the people in Amarillo TX who build nuclear warheads. Most of the community are born-again Christians who are Rapturists -- they welcome the end of the world. Their story is contrasted with those people in the town and all over who are against nuclear war. It is an unbelievable sociological tale, and Mojtabai writes with compelling impartiality. She tells the whole story in a way that reads like one of the best novels I have ever read. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in human nature. It will blow you away.

Blood over Texas
Published in Unknown Binding by Arlington House ()
Average review score:

Outstanding book gives the real story of the Mexican WarLike many people, I was given the ration of bull about how the Mexican War (1846-1848) was just an example of the US picking on a poor, defenseless nation. This book, though, sets the record straight. Even though it is a small tome, it packs a wallop in both information and logic. It lays out the case that Texas was as independent from Mexico as Mexico was from Spain and that Texas was as free to do with its freedom whatever it wanted to including joining the US. It lays out the case that the Texas border was at the Rio Grande, not the Neuces. It lays out a particularly devestating case that shows Mexican saber-rattling. I urge everyone who has the slightest bit of interest in that time period to read this book.

Boom and Bust: The Historical Cycles of Matamoros and Brownsville
Published in Paperback by Eakin Publications (May, 1995)
Average review score:

enthusiasts should read this, too know of brownsville's histi have to say that milo kearney does a great job in documenting the history of brownsville, and matamoros. everything has a beginning, and this Professor of Historical sciences at the University of Texas at Brownsville does a fantastic job. The only thing that is really not good are the illustrations by petr Gawendra. they are really non enthusiastic, and super cheezy. i dont care what any one else says,a lousy effort. any way the book is worth it, for any one who wants to find out the history of this city [brownsville]this book is for you. Antonio Knopp also contributed to this literature work.

The Border
Published in Paperback by Sam Houston State Univ (August, 2002)
Average review score:

Rattan writes with a robust imaginationThe Border showcases the poetry and lyrical style of Cleatus Rattan, a former academician (he recently retired from the English Department at Cisco Community College) and a Texas rancher (a hundred miles west of Fort Worth near the small Bible Belt community of Cisco). Rattan writes with a robust imagination, a compelling sense of humor, and an artist's eye for detail that readers will find as entertaining as it is thoughtful and thought provoking. In Cisco, Texas: Here, no one comes to visit/to see the sights. In San Francisco,/well scrubbed guests arrive at the door,/bags in hand, sheepish smiles/on their faces, with plans to scamper/in well known directions. Fewer friends/arrive now, but those who come/have no plans, their hands reach/for the dog's head. They see sheep,/mesquite, scrub oak, the smile/on my face, and stars meandering/to nowhere known.

Bravo of the Brazos: John Larn of Fort Griffin, Texas
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Txt) (September, 2002)
Average review score:

A fascinating tale of power and corruptionBravo Of The Brazos: John Larn Of Fort Griffin, Texas by independent scholar Robert K. DeArment is the true life story of John Larn, a colorful Texas lawman turned frontier outlaw. No stranger to shootouts, Larn led a vigilante committee with widespread support and killed at least a dozen men before he turned 29. At first his killing of horse or cattle thieves on sight garnered approval, but then he started to kill for profit or revenge, and when Larn threatened to reveal the names of the people on his vigilante committee, a mob of relatives, former friends, and various associates ruthlessly silenced his threat and ended his life. Bravo Of The Brazos is a fascinating tale of power and corruption, as well as a welcome and appreciated contribution to academic American Frontier History & Biography collections.

The Caballeros of Ruby, Texas
Published in Paperback by Panther Creek Press (22 March, 2002)
Average review score:

Great Family DramaI not only had a great read, but I also learned a great deal about life in a culture very different from my own. If you like rich, emotional stories this is a great one. I loved the women in the story and how the three of the daughters who narrated the book dealt with their father's loss of wealth and standing and finally, his death. Just the kind of book you want to curl up with and escape.
